Innovator in Residence Title

The Innovator in Residence is a whole of Government initiative that invites world renowned thinkers to bring their own unique perspective to the issues that are affecting Queenslanders.

This residency was established in partnership with the Year of Creativity to stimulate ideas surrounding design, creativity and innovation. The ideas generated from the residency were applied to topical issues such as water conservation, urban growth and the utilisation of technology.

Based in Brisbane from 13 July - 29 August 2009, Professor Ratti undertook research and teaching activities that brought his wealth of ideas and international experience to Brisbane. During his tenure Professor Ratti worked in partnership with schools and universities and established links with local businesses and organisations bringing a fresh perspective to local issues.

The inaugural 2009 Innovator in Residence was Professor Carlo Ratti, an internationally renowned architect and designer who teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, where he directs the SENSEable City Laboratory - an institution that uses the increasing deployment of sensors and hand-held electronics to allow a new approach to the study of the built environment.

As part of his 2009 residency, Professor Ratti established a Living Laboratory in The Studio at the State Library of Queensland. Professor Ratti was joined by more than a dozen of his research team from MIT's SENSEable City Laboratory and by local Queensland researchers, academics and other experts.
